Problem

The Alexandria Area High School established the AB block schedule in 2014. Due to this, AP teachers and students have noticed a decrease in the amount of instruction time they have in one school year. This is causing a threat to the AP and college students' understanding of material.

Plan

The Alexandria Area High School has the option to modify their current AB block schedule to a modified 4x4 schedule. This modified schedule would allow college and AP students and teachers to cover most if not all of the course material before the national exam in May.

Modifying a block schedule depends on a high school's values and interests. That's why weighing the advantages and disadvantages before deciding on a block schedule is important.

Modifying Block Schedules to Accommodate
AP and College Students

Hello, my name is Abbie Biegner and I'm a first year student at Gustavus Adolphus College. I'm originally from Alexandria, Minnesota, and I attended Alexandria Area High School. As a recent high school graduate of AAHS, I understand what it's like to be a student who is involved in academics, music, sports and other organizations. I also understand what it's like to take Advanced Placement and college courses. Since the Alexandria Area High School was established in 2014, the school switched from a traditional schedule to a block schedule. This new AB block schedule has posed a problem for many AP and college classes. To solve this issue, I have done lots of research to ensure that AP and college students and teachers have time to finish, focus and understand the AP and college course material in one school year.
